PERSONAL STATEMENT

My name is Claire Dirette and I am currently studying human biology at Michigan State University. After my four years here I hope to go to Medical school where I will focus on the study of women in pursuit of becoming an OB-GYN. I always knew I wanted to study human biology, yet did not decide on gynecology until later in my high school career. Many of my friends would tell me how their male OB-GYNs made them uncomfortable. Upon this, I began thinking about how more females should be OB-GYNs, who could be understanding and could relate to common difficulties women experienced.

Following these stories, my mom’s OB-GYN, Dr. Tempest Allen, found her cervical cancer. Thankfully she caught it early, but in those time we worked with that Dr. Allen closely and relied on her heavily. This confirmed to me that I would like to become an OB-GYN. Dr. Allen, the woman who found my mom’s cervical cancer, later decided to work at a Planned Parenthood. She told stories of how she loved it and how she could directly see herself helping people in need.

“Working at a Planned Parenthood changed my perspective on life for the better. It has made more understanding and realize the harsh situations many women have to go through throughout their lives. I enjoy being the person that a woman can look to in times of need. Many of my clients are young and scared and do not need shame added onto their emotions,” says Dr. Allen.

This quote inspired me even further to becoming an OB-GYN. I think is is vital to spread the idea of women’s health and to discourage the shame many people put on women regarding their sexual lives and health. Many times, when women are entering a Planned Parenthood, they are possibly vulnerable and need a non-judgemental source of help. Because I grew up to be a very empathetic person, I feel as if I can be understanding and helpful in this sort of situation. However, this is not the only reason I would like to become an OB-GYN. I have a deep interest in human biology as well as the female reproductive system. I find it inexplicably fascinating and am excited to learn more.
